-Two hours of my life disipated before my eyes, as an acquaintance of mine took to the stage and walked around almost lost, expounding on the mundane. It was meant to be comedy, but it turned into something nearly torturous…my apologies, but it’s true. My eyelids grew heavy and I had to get up and walk. I waited, hoping for a comdic moment, something to laugh at, anything. At that moment, the slightest bit of humor would have brought the house down. All is relative. In relation to the long winding stories that lead no where with the least impression of humor, a joke would have done much for cheer. He kept trying to up the ante however and somehow was unable to out wit himself, leaving us gazing up at the stage, there because we did not wish our actions to be misconstrued as betrayal. It’s the seeming spontaneity of what’s being said that gives it comedic life, not always how brilliant what is said really is. Eddie Izzard makes me laugh everytime, I watch the same HBO special, because of it’s improvised touch.
As it were, and being no other than what it were, I kept hoping for this acquaintance of mine, to let go of the script. Comedy is meant to be off book, not with. Think of the guy who tries to tell a joke and can’t remember how it goes. Well? Not very pleasant is it. The reason, is because a joke shouldn’t know how it goes, until it’s told. If you can’t remember, improvise. I mean, sure there is to be a certain idea of the joke, as in acting, there is an idea of the monologue, but all else is improvisation.
I kept having this image run through my head of me running upon stage and dying very melodramatically, in the process tearing the microphone away from him and ending with, a visual representation of what is occurring on stage-I wonder if he much would have minded.
Nonetheless, I kept myself to myself and even when I thought I should pass books out (as there was a stack int he back of the room) to those in attendance, I did not. I think this would have had a bit of humor in it.
I got home, and turned on the TV. The late night tv had the same effect as the performance, a bit mind numbing…kind of humorous.
